Unboxing HubSpot Revenue Hub: Contracts

Host: Chris Carolan · Guests: Arun Gunari, Ryan Ginsberg

September 3, 2026

Chris presses Create Contract live on Hubsessed, the newsletter he just bought, with HubSpot's Arun Gunari and builder Ryan Ginsberg. The product library isn't ready — that's the lesson. Then: the subscription migration beta, the contract record page, and a portal customers drive themselves.

Key takeaways

A contract is meant to be the live record of the whole customer relationship — the initial sale, the growth, the amendments, the churn — instead of a chain of deals, tickets and renewal records someone has to stitch together after the fact. Arun Gunari: "contracts is a live data record that captures the entire relationship."

Deals are for managing a sales process. When post-sale revenue work gets stuffed into deal pipelines, stages and properties, you lose the sales-process reporting you built the pipeline for — and you create an ownership handoff that does not survive contact with a real team.

Line items are the atomic part of a contract, and they come from the product library. Pressing Create Contract does not rescue an unprepared library — Chris hit exactly that wall live, on his own portal, and named it: "this is why it's an unboxing folks."

Recurring is one relationship shape among several. Contracts ship today for one-time, evergreen and fixed-term; usage and consumption are designed for and not yet released — "The model is already there. The pipes are already there."

Migrating subscriptions to contracts is the customer's choice, not a forced move. The beta carries the payment-processing IDs across so the end customer is never asked to cancel and re-subscribe.

Recurring lines on a contract become subscriptions when the contract activates — one subscription per recurring line. Ryan Ginsberg's framing: it is not a move and not a merge, it is a strategic morph into the new data model.

The contract preview returns a revenue summary, MRR, ARR and a billing schedule with no contracts setup performed at all, and what shows there is available in reporting — the visibility Chris says people have been asking for for years.

The contracts API is open enough to build production surfaces on today. Ryan's client portal reads the contract, creates a change quote, prorates it, produces a PO or quote PDF, and writes the signed change back to the contract with no sales rep in the loop.
