Mindset came up all day at Moonshots Live 2026, Chris Carolan said, yet the focus stays on building technology and "throwing a lot of money at it that I don't think touches that problem, like hardly at all." (12:41-13:16)
Chris named the gap as learned helplessness: people not asking for what they need and not engaging AI in conversation. "there's no amount of technology that solves for that specific piece". It has to come from leadership culture. (14:03-14:30)
AI raises the stakes on trust. Most organizations still lack psychological safety, Chris said, and AI is harder to trust when people cannot see how it works and are not open, or not allowed, to experiment: "all we can do is make tech that allows for us to show up more human in every way". The commitment was the value. Deciding in June to look at the event's two XPRIZEs pushed Chris to build and document all summer: "That in and of itself is how I define the value of committing to go to this event." (04:02-04:50)
Human domain expertise decides what AI tools produce. Watching the Future Vision XPRIZE finalists, most of them filmmakers, Chris said: "If filmmakers have access to these tools and somebody without that expertise has access, chances are they're going to crush it". (17:40-18:12)
The Build with Gemini XPRIZE, judged in part on revenue built within its 90-day window (a criterion in the published rules), looked to Chris like a field the team could have competed in. It left him feeling Value-First Markets is probably viable for investment if the team ever wanted it, and he chose to leave the regret at the door. (18:20-20:44, 22:53-23:15)
"What lights you up and how can I help?" was the networking prompt at lunch. Chris struggled with his own answer: new projects or investment would change the focus, while people in the Value-First Collective who have raised their hands are not all activated yet. (06:03-07:15, 11:24-12:28)
Nico Lafakis's fear of missing out turned into validation. The people at the forefront, he said, are no different in how they use AI from what the hosts talk about on the show. (21:03-22:53)
Better context, better decisions. Recounting Palmer Luckey's firefighting drones, which can tell a wildfire from a campfire or a cigarette, a host said: "the fact is, is we don't have to make decisions based on incomplete context anymore". The hosts also pictured drone firefighters as new work that still helps humans. (26:23-29:23)
Models are already capable enough. Recounting Emad Mostaque's point about competent models, a host said "we literally do not need more performance from models to handle most of what's being talked about". (32:26-33:01)
The board: Nico flatly refused Meta's new enterprise AI business and called Nvidia's chip-level agent watchdog unsurprising. The #1 story, OpenAI halting training of its most capable models, was announced and not read. (33:44-38:09)
The close returned to the open: "mindset is everything right now". The headlines keep "feeding into the fear instead of the opportunity" when any person could use AI to create value today. (41:28-42:36)
