Is it news when a giant AI lab catches up?

Meta's claim that its chat model helped researchers solve five open math problems was a story on Monday's show. My co-host Nico Lafakis's reaction: "it's really like, cool, you caught up." He wasn't surprised, and he says why: "if you're in the model making business and you are at that Titanic level that Meta is, there should not be a shocker."

OpenAI, he says, "has been knocking these things out for like the last couple of months." He points to a chart of math problems solved between June and the end of July: "The spike is absolutely insane."

If you're sizing up an AI lab's announcement, it's a useful yardstick to hear.
