Documentation people actually read
October 21, 2026
Documentation only works if the person it's for will read it.
My co-host Erin Wiggers does complex HubSpot work and documents it so she can hand it off. Here's how she handles readers who all want different things:
"I always add some kind of toggle or persona selector to the documentation… the executive level, the functional, marketing team level… And then the technical level for the IT people… because they all want to see different stuff."
She also tells Claude, her AI assistant:
"Make this digestible, make this easy on the eyes, give it a visual hierarchy."
And what changed:
"I feel like people actually read it now, at least some of it, which is a big difference from prior experience."
Give each reader their own level, and keep the page easy on the eyes.
