Functional context, not nice to know
October 21, 2026
A long email isn't the problem. A short one isn't either. Sending the same one to everybody is.
My co-host Erin Wiggers on slicing one piece of content to fit who's reading and when:
"You can have your long email and then just slice it different ways… segment it by persona and then make one of the personas get the long one and one of them get the short one… segment it by when you send it out, and maybe if it's first thing in the morning you can send a long email, but if it's the end of the day nobody's reading a long email."
"It doesn't have to be all the context at all times. It's figuring out what is actionable. What is the functional context, and not just the nice to know."
Start with what the reader needs to act on.
