What's the difference between a bug and an exploit?

Is a bug the same thing as an exploit? Nico draws the line plainly.

On Monday's show we had just read that Claude wrote machine-checked proofs (guarantees a computer can verify) that over 100 open-source libraries (shared code anyone can use) hold specific security properties, and that the attempts turned up hundreds of bugs along the way (Anthropic). My co-host Nico Lafakis gave his working definitions, with a caveat up front: "I don't know for sure. This is why we don't call ourselves developers."

His version: when you hear "bug," "something was miscoded, basically, with the platform." "I think if you allow for something to happen, it's an exploit. And if it's doing something it's not supposed to be doing, that's a bug."

If you've nodded along when those two words get used in a meeting, this is a plain-language way to tell them apart.
