Why QuickBooks and HubSpot disagree about who a customer is

Everybody thinks the word customer is obvious, right up until two systems have to agree on it.

Casey Hawkins brought this QuickBooks and Xero mapping update forward because she ran into the problem last week. Her client's invoices kept coming through without the billing contact, and for that customer, in her words, "this was the solve that has been months in the making."

Here is why I think it keeps happening. HubSpot treats the email address as the unique ID, and "no other system works like that." The others are built around accounts, opportunities and invoices, not the humans. Then comes the language problem. HubSpot has a contact and a company, and everything else just says customer. When you integrate, that is almost always the first point of friction, so talk it through before you build.
